The Mirror elevator enhances accessibility, respects historical context, and introduces a contemporary architectural expression that integrates quietly yet meaningfully into the Old County environment.

TYPE OF PROJECT: Architectural building / Public building

LOCATION: The exterior elevator, positioned alongside the historic building, Celje old town center, Slovenia

KEY ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES:

_Mirrored façade envelope

_Contextual proportional design

_Minimalist structural expression

_Light and environment interaction

_Discreet vertical integration

_Heritage-sensitive positioning

_Functional accessibility upgrade

_Old–new architectural dialogue

The Exterior Elevator is a contemporary architectural addition to the Old County that combines modern functionality with a respectful response to the building’s historic character. It is designed as a discreet intervention that enhances usability while preserving the integrity of the heritage setting.

The modern spatial design also represents the use of modern materials and symbolizes progress and innovation in architecture. The mirrored facade can serve as a contrast and complement to the traditional forms and materials of the existing building. The new elevator adds modern functionality that was absent in the neo-historic building and enriches the architectural language of the entire location with a contemporary look.

The design of the elevator itself takes into account the proportional characteristics of the existing building and ensures that the new structure is not excessive or inappropriate in comparison to the older building. The mirrored facade allows the new structure to visually connect with the existing buildings and tries to create a sense of continuity between the old and the new, reducing the visual load that modern architecture could cause. The mirrored surface changes the perception of space, as the environment is constantly changing depending on the light and weather. This dynamism adds a new dimension to the existing context.

The mirrored elevator can act as a bridge between the past and the present, allowing a dialogue between different architectural styles. This can stimulate discussion about the meaning of cultural heritage and its place in contemporary society. By respecting the existing architecture and its character, the new intervention preserves the historical context and story of the space, rather than completely replacing it. A contemporary architectural intervention can also serve as an educational tool, helping visitors understand the development of architecture and the importance of cultural heritage.
