Spanning Time: Connecting Celje’s Historic City Center to the Old Castle with a New Iconic Landmark.

TYPE OF PROJECT: Urban infrastructure / Architectural Intervention

LOCATION: Celje, Slovenia

KEY ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES:

_Integrated experiential route

_Subtle spatial placement

_Preservation of the iconic skyline

_Contemporary architectural aesthetic

_Functional and symbolic connectivity

Celje is currently at a pivotal moment in its urban and cultural transformation. As a city that has experienced dramatic economic shifts in the past, it is now focusing on strengthening its identity—evolving from a former industrial center into a vibrant cultural and tourist destination. In this context, Nande Korpnik's architectural vision of a suspension bridge is not merely an infrastructure project, but a strategic intervention that physically and symbolically connects the city center with its most significant landmark: the Old Castle of Celje.

The current urban landscape is fragmented; although the Old Castle towers over Celje, accessing it remains a challenge. The architectural proposal, which envisions a pedestrian path leading from the city center, across the Splavar Bridge and through the city park, to a suspension footbridge between Miklavž Hill and Castle Hill, elegantly resolves this disconnect. The key feature of the design is its subtlety: the bridge, positioned at approximately half the height of the hills, does not compete with the historic panorama, but rather unobtrusively complements it, creating a unique experiential path.

The project thus becomes a metaphor for modern Celje—a city that does not forget its medieval heritage, but skillfully upgrades it with a contemporary urban touch. With the suspension bridge, Celje gains more than just a new tourist attraction; it gains a holistic connection that encourages residents and visitors to actively explore the space. It is an architectural articulation of the ambition to develop the city into a connected, open, and attractive urban whole, where the past and future coexist in harmony.
